The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) is proud to be developing Harkness Memorial Park – a 128-hectare cemetery and public park in Melbourne's west. Here at GMCT, it all started with one question: What should a cemetery be?
We envisioned a reassuring sanctuary where people could connect to nature and each other, but we also believe that it should be what you need. So, we invited you all to reimagine the public cemetery with us.
Engaging with the Traditional Owners of the land, the Wurundjeri people, and the local community has been central to our design process. With your help, we’ve master planned a memorial park that embraces Wurundjeri culture, creates a place for peaceful reflection and remembrance, and celebrates life through a multi-use space for the public.
We welcome your honest feedback at each step of the design and construction process. Explore our past engagement phases, and watch this space for new opportunities

Have your say
As we look ahead to the opening of Harkness Memorial Park in 2027, we want to hear from you and your community about what you’d like to see from day one.
Do you imagine a calendar filled with traditional days of remembrance, birdwatching tours or community garden working bees? Maybe you’re dreaming of outdoor performances, nature‑based learning, or meditation sessions.
Share your thoughts to help shape the first year of life at Harkness Memorial Park, so it reflects the values, memories and connections that matter most to our community.
